Burney Collection of 17th and 18th century newspapers

News from Patricia Killiard, Head of Electronic Services and Systems Services, Cambridge University Library:

The Burney Collection of 17th and 18th century newspapers online is now available to staff and students of the university. This was made possible through an agreement negotiated by JISC Collections for all UK universities. The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media.

Direct access is via http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/cambuni?db=BBCN (2.6 million documents). Additionally, a site has been set up by publisher Gale Cengage to facilitate cross-searching with the 19th Century British Library Newspapers under the heading British Newspapers 1600-1900 at http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/cambuni?db=BNWS (13 million documents).

Access off-campus is by Raven id and password. Please follow the link ‘Shibboleth users click here’.
