Scanner now available in the Library

We now have a scanner in Homerton College Library attached to one of the PWF computers on the ground floor. The scanner is an Epson Perfection V500 Photo. It is a high quality scanner with attachments for scanning negatives and slides (you will need to borrow the attachments from the Library Enquiry Desk). During staff hours (9.00-17.00, weekdays) we can show you how to use it if you are unsure.

Basically, you just log in to the attached PWF computer, place your document in the scanner, press the right hand button on the front, and the EPSON Scan application launches (it can also be launched manually in start>All Programs>Scanner Packages). More advanced scanning modes are offered with EPSON Scan to allow finer control of the scanner but the default setting is adequate for simple text documents with images.

ABBYY FineReader Sprint (in start>All Programs>Scanner Packages) is provided for doing optical character recognition (OCR) to convert your scanned text images into editable and searchable text. The OCR’d text can be exported directly into Microsoft Word.

The Epson website offers a comprehensive online manual for the scanner.
